Good afternoon! My family and I have just moved up from Houston, TX, and we are going to be living in the Bangor area. My son and are true disc golf addicts. Have plastic will travel.
I'm looking for a home course, and some recommendations on the whens and wheres when it comes to disc golf in Maine. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks a ton, and I'm sure my son and I will see you all very soon. |

Welcome to Maine!
Moving into the Bangor area, you won't find a ton of disc golf that doesn't require a bit of travel. But there is one course just outside of Bangor in Orrington. Here's the PDGA directory listing for it: http://www.pdga.com/course_directory/course/dr-disc-golf I haven't played it yet myself, but I've heard plenty of good things about it. And I know they've got at least one weekly league (I want to say Sundays) so you can be sure to meet and greet with a lot of the local "addicts".
You can also check out the course listings here at Maine Disc Golf at this page: http://www.mainediscgolf.com/courses.php This way you can see exactly where everything is in relation to where you'll be living.
Disc golf in Maine is an experience like no other. Lots of good courses and people. Hope to see you around.

| Yeah, I checked out the PDGA directory for sure. Travel is not a problem, just curious to get the vibe from people on the must play places are. |

Just wanted to say that I'm finally up here, and have already staked out my home course in Orrington. I've been out for a few rounds with my son, and absolutely love it! I'll be out of town this weekend playing in NY, but when I come back in, I'll be heading out to Fairfield and a couple of others.
One question I keep on asking is, "where is the long arm course?" I love the tight, and love short, but I'm itching to bomb my Z-Nuke on something other than just a field! LOL! I'm open for some suggestions!
Thanks to all the staff and players at Orrington for making us feel right at home here. BIG thanks to Joe for playing doubles with my son Conall this Sunday. You're a great sport, and I'm glad the kid was able to contribute a few times! |

Matt,
There aren't a ton of long, stretch out your arm type courses in Maine. Not to say there aren't pro-level courses, though. Just that most of the terrain in the state is in the woods, so that's where the courses are.
If you're looking for length, Skyriders in Fairfield has it. It's mostly wooded, but there are a few holes over 400 feet to cut loose on. Also, the new Lavallee Links features the longest course in the state (over 7000 feet) as well as the second longest hole in the state (1101 feet). That's in Randolph.
For more open air courses, you have to venture to some of our southern-most spots. Bennett Farm in Gorham and Pleasant Hill in Scarborough feature some long open shots. Bennett has two holes at 800+ feet and plenty of elevation change. Pleasant Hill is on the site of an old ball golf course, so open fairways are the name of the game. The pro layout on the Gold course features two holes at ~500 feet, one over 700 and the longest hole in Maine, the 1111 foot hole 17. Touring pro Steve Brinster called it one of the best courses he's ever played when he was in town winning the DDGC back in June.
There's something for everyone when it comes to disc golf in Maine. The only downside to being further north like you are is that most of it requires a bit of a drive. _________________ DDGC - June 5-6, 2010 |

Great tips guys! As for the travel..... HAVE DISCS WILL DRIVE! LOL! I'm always up for a bit of a drive for the game!
I read about the new courses in Randolph. Looked pretty cool, but had trouble finding the address or directions on how to get to them. Guess they are too new. Saw somebody complaining about the D and the terrain on them. LOL! Seemed like a bad case of NEWBIE, no offense as we all start somewhere. So I look forward to it. Thanks guys! Any MUST COME OUT AND PLAY times out there? |
